Knit a Basic Scarf, Using Garter Stitch
The knitted basic scarf using garter stitch is perfect for the beginner knitter. It is often the go-to stitch for experienced knitters, as it’s straightforward to customise. Use different types of wool, add a trim, a fringe or pom poms to the edges which will personalise your lovely scarf.
Beginner knitters often start with garter stitch to create basic scarves. With the distinctive horizontal lines and loops, it not only looks lovely but is a great introduction to knitting.
This elegant pattern has lots of stretch and looks fabulous under a winter jacket.

MATERIALS FOR A BASIC KNITTED SCARF

WOOL
20ply (Super Chunky) Wool
I’ve used Rowan Big Wool which is 20ply (Super Chunky). This very soft 100% Merino wool is perfect for the beginner knitter as it is very quick to knit. This wool is divine when you’re knitting scarfs, it’s warm, soft, and feels beautiful.
You will only need three balls of Rowan Big Wool for this lovely scarf.
NEEDLES
10mm Straight Needles
The 10mm straight needles are large and perfect for 20ply wool.

OVERVIEW OF THE BASIC KNITTED SCARF
Cast on 26 stitches
The great advantage of knitting scarves is you can adjust the number of stitches depending on the desired width. I prefer wide scarves and have selected 26 for this garter-stitch scarf.
THE PATTERN
Garter stitch is one of the basic stitches to knit with. Knit every stitch.
Knit for a total of 115 cm then cast off. It is easy to adjust the length of the scarf by just knitting till you have the desired length.
