How to Join Yarn with No Knots or Lumps

Adding a new ball of yarn to your knitting project is straightforward when using the invisible knot (magic knot) method. An invisible knot is a type of knot that is used to secure two pieces of wool together in a way that is not visible. It is a valuable technique to have in your knitting toolkit, as it allows you to quickly and seamlessly join yarn without having to weave in any ends or add visible knots to your work.

An invisible knot is handy when working on projects where the yarn colour frequently changes, such as striped patterns or colour-work designs. In these cases, an invisible knot can help to ensure that the colour change is as seamless as possible.

Invisible knots are essential because they create a seamless and polished appearance without large knots or bumps in your knitting. In addition, it makes a professional and visually appealing finish to your project.

It’s important to note that the invisible knot will not be completely hidden, but it should be relatively discreet and not affect the overall appearance of your project.

How to Join Yarn with an Invisible Knot

To make an invisible knot, you will need;

Two yarn ends of equal length. I’ve selected blue coloured wool for this demonstration so that the loops can be easily seen.

First, tie a basic knot onto your existing (grey) wool with the new (blue) wool.

Tie a knot onto your new (blue) wool with the tail of the (grey) wool.

One knot will be on the new (blue) wool, and the other knot will be on the existing wool.

Hold onto both of the yarn tails. Pull the tails so that the two knots (the grey and blue) come together and are tight, creating one knot.

Cut the edges off the knots. It will not come apart.

Then keep knitting.

This creates a strong and secure join between the two yarn ends without any visible knots or bumps in knitting. The invisible knot can be used in any type of knitting, whether working with flat pieces or in the round.
